November Expert Series: Floodplains Workshop

11/18/2023

Saturday, November 18th
10 am - 12 noon

Lareau Park, Waitsfield

Picture
Are you curious about what a floodplain is and why you hear that term in almost every discussion on flooding and climate resilience?

Then, join Friends of the Mad River and Ned Swanberg of the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (VT DEC) to learn about what floodplains are, why they are so important to health and safety, and how the river and precipitation shapes the valley that we call home. Ned is a regional floodplain manager for Vermont Central, and manages https://floodready.vermont.gov.

The workshop will be held at the Austin parcel, which is also the location of an ongoing floodplain forest restoration project. We'll learn about riverside soils, plants, and other signs to discern the health and vitality of the river and how it affects our lives. We'll also learn from our local experts on the history of the land and see the progress of the ongoing restoration work.

Please come dressed appropriately to be outdoors for 1-2 hours.
Distance: 0.5 - 1 mile
Terrain: Trail is mostly flat and consists of dirt trails covered in leaf litter or grass.

Register below and email [email protected] with questions or if you need any accommodation.

It would be good if this workshop was video taped so that the information can be shared with many who cannot attend but who would benefit from the knowledge and use it in their communities.

Hello Katherine, thank you for reaching out. While we wont be able to record this session since we will be outside, we will take your feedback into consideration for future events we organize. You're absolutely right that not everyone will be able to show up in person.

Ned has prepared a handout with helpful information about floodplains and if you fill out the RSVP, we'll be able to send this to you
